SMOKE ALARMS | ||
It is very important to ensure that smoke alarms are installed and operational in your home.
It is essential to check the battery regularly (ideally monthly) and change the battery at least once a year. Smoke alarms are incredibly cheap, there really is no excuse not to have one.
In London between 1996 and 2000, 411 people died as a result of fire. Of these 77% had no smoke alarm, and 5% had a smoke alarm but the battery was flat or removed.
Consider getting a smoke alarm with an escape light on. These are the same as normal smoke alarms but have a small light which turns on when the alarm sounds, aiding an escape. Consider, if a fire starts or spreads to your electrical system you will have no lights and the house would be full of smoke. Are your exits clear? Could you find your way out? Do you have an escape route planned for upstair rooms? Are keys to window locks near the windows in case of emergency?
In a smokey situation keep low where the clear air is, as smoke and warm air rise to the top of the room. Get out as quickly as possible - leave the fire fighting to the professionals.
