replace boiler

You haven't answered my questions. Let's say a boiler swap takes you two days - you are still making more money than your local GP. A window cleaner has overheads too - do you pay them fifty quid per window? What is this great big overhead you refer to that stands between profit and turnover? Come on - enlighten us. (he won't).

joe I find it amazing if you were in business for 30years and still self employed that you can get it so wrong.

you are clearly trolling and being a pest. you would need to be an idiot to give the exact facts an figure to some clown over the internet on a public internet forum

my only conclusion is some people in the world believe working tradesman should live in hovels and be peasants.

there is no land of milk & honey in the plumbing and heating trade. only hard work and grief from some that believe we earn mega bucks

I dont fit boilers 12 hours a day, 24/7, 365 days a year. only a complete moron believe that one install can reflex the total time and effort that goes in to run a business

Makes no difference what you do on other days. How much do you charge a customer to swap a boiler in a day if that boiler costs you £750.

You have a combi boiler swap. The average price quoted on this forum is around £2K. The average boiler being quoted for is around £750.

That leaves £1250 for a days work (and a short day at that).

So how much of that £1250 is taken up by overheads? Well? Travel? (A few pence). Insurance? (a few pence). Depreciation on tools? (A few pence) Come on, give us the low-down.

What about the low down on how you calculate the average quote on a forum that doesn't deal in quotes. Why don't you advise people how to fit instead of telling who should earn what because you're embarrased about the size of your c*ck::

no, I work it out, I need to charge more  I am silting my own throat

Joe, you're missing the point...Mehran is correct in that you price your time/work to take into account the fact that you can't always be working as you have to factor in time to travel, do the paperwork, training, whatever...as well as those slack times when there is just less work around.

I've recently had the experience of having a new boiler fitted (direct replacement for an old Baxi on an open vent system)...My issue was that the company that serviced the old boiler only 2 months ago (and said at that time it was in good condition) failed to spot an impending heat exchanger failure (fair enough), but then quoted me £450 + vat to supply the part that I could source elsewhere for £250 inc vat...Their (reasonable) £55/hr labour charge, though, was only for fitting what they supply...other folk where saying £80+vat per hour just to have a look and both were saying 5-6hrs to change the HE...
The same company then advised a new direct replacment boiler for £2175+vat suppy and fit...They estimated a day to do so.

I sourced a boiler (one of the models they suggested) for £700...which made the fitting cost £1800 approx...

I then tried to get a reasonable answer on here as to if this was a reasonable price and was told effectively to stop asking...(actually asked for boiler recommendations, too, and got no straightforward answer).

I found a chap who said he would do it for £300...he estimated 6 hrs work...In fact he spent about double that and I gave him £500 (even though he only asked for £300) as I thought that fair and it was STILL about half the price of the alternative quote.

Two other "business men" failed to turn up (as arranged) to view and quote.
Another three refused to even turn up unless it was a definite job and another one only wanted to do the repair job (he was the £80/hr man)...

I FULLY understand about overheads, slack time, etc...BUT I don't expect to be charged £300/hr for anything...much less fitting a boiler! Even if it had taken the original company 12hrs (instead of the 6-7 they estimated) that would still have been £150/hr!!!

PS: and that is assuming they paid full retail price for the boiler (highly unlikely)

I make a good living a a heating installer, what's the problem? If we make loads of money and its easy Joe, why don't you retrain? I would if I could see another trade made loads more cash than my own, and was pretty simple!

The only people that do anything for this country are the exporters. Your contribution (like mine) is zero.

How much do you charge then? (Bet it's a secret).

Your severely limited intellectual capacity clearly will not permit you to understand the point of this forum. On here every contributor's role is confined to offering free advice (not that there's means to charge for it) which makes it a charitable cause. What they do away from that doesn't colour the fact that OP's benefit from their knowledge without their charges. To continue to use it as a pricing stick is an insult to people who are selfless enough to share useful information.

You only pay for what you're too incompetent or too lazy to do. In which case learn, pay or do without. Don't expect others to compromise their living to compensate for your inadequacies in life.
