CheckATrade

I've used a couple of (long term) fellas on here, since at least they seem to know what they are talking about. Haven't gone wrong yet. ;)

Penny wise and pound foolish comes to mind. He was looking for a cheap job and got caught.

Hard to be sure - he paid £3K up front, which was 50%. Without trawling through it all, seems the the job was for a bathroom strip and fit, and £6K doesn't sound too cheap IMHO

No. I'd do it for half of that.

But why didn't he use local people he knew?

They were far from cheap. There quote was higher than one from a professional builder who installed my boiler and rewired and plastered my kitchen.

CheckATrade sounded like a good idea. The cowboys had loads of rave reviews on CheckATrade, all nearly 10 out of 10. I rang two of the people, and they seemed genuine, and enthused about the work. The owner informed me (private communication) that members cannot filter out bad reviews. Either I have been very very unlucky, or CheckATrade is not all that it seems. I make no claim to know the answer.

After the cowboys were asked to leave, I contacted one recommended fitter. He could not do anything until after Christmas, as he gets more work than he can do. I managed to find another person who is good.

It is not easy to find good trades people.

I've seen this happen before. They do good work which leads to more work than they can handle - so they start to rush rather than turn jobs down. They go for the money - and the quality falls.

Make hay while the sun shines I suppose.

The review has now gone live. I find it curious that they are allowed to remain a member given that I have had three surveys which state that the work is very poor, and clearly completely goes against the CheckATrade 'ethos', or at least the claimed ethos.

Yes. but you believe a STRANGE man on a public forum.

I know a few local blokes on Checkatrade. They are all crap. They joined because they needed work. They needed work cos they are crap. Some post their own reviews. Its so obvious too. Checkatrade don't mind, they are concerned with their income not tradesmens punters. They will always have a get out clause. I thought this was common knowledge?
Don't get me wrong, there are a few good guys on Checkatrade. Just remember finding them is still pot luck. Forget Checkatrade, use personal recommendation, get a few quotes and expect to pay/wait for the right guys.

I have been a member since september.
It has worked well for me.
But as Mitch has said it is flawed. They were not interested, when I said that the location of one of my feedbacks was wrong. So now, if anyone looks at my profile, it says that I do work in Warrington ffs
