OK - here's the scenario. You are driving in Wales up and down really twisty roads. You are having to change up and down all the time. You go around a twisty section, you are changing gear and are suddenly confronted by a cow (or pothole). You only have one hand on the wheel instead of two. How is that 'in control'?

Joe... I would suggest that you surrender your licence immediately and buy a bus ticket as you have no driving abillity, you have forgotten what you have been tought when you learned to drive and are a hazard on the road.. A good driver knows to change gear and to be in the correct gear BEFORE you reach the hazard or bend in the road so there is no need to remove your hand from the wheel in the event of you encountering the unexpected.... If you care to look, you will find it in the advanced drivers manual..

Automatics have their purpose, they are ideal for the disabled, Americans and the terminally baffled

Squeek, squeek.......What's that?......Joe on his bicycle.... :D

Joe, don't worry about driving around in Wales, the Welsh are a bit choosy who they let in these days, you'd be detained at the border... ;)

Ok then Driver 1 is driving down a road changing gear. A kid on a bike flies out in front of him from nowhere. Driver 1 has one hand on the wheel, one on the gear stick and a foot on the clutch.

Driver 2 drives down the same road and the same kid flies out in front of him.
Driver 2 has both hands on the wheel and no foot on the clutch.

Which driver is better placed to stop running the kid down?

Joe-90 kicks ass.

The driver who is driving the manual vehicle.....he applies the brake like you would in an automatic. You dont drive with your hands on the pedals Joe!

But he may need to take evasive action with the wheel. That's why you are not allowed to drive and eat a Mars Bar.

Then if you take evasive action with the wheel you are asking for more trouble, you never turn the wheel in an emergency stop, you apply the brakes and just stop the vehicle.

You may know that you cannot stop so evasive action is the only option. What then?

You use your hands to turn the wheel....in an emergency situation you wouldnt be using or thinking about the gear system.

The only argument you can have for automatic is preference, manual is better all round for driving, control, cost, performance and economy.

No it's not. Even automatics have sequential gears if you want them.

You can't keep taking your hands off the wheel and have control.

That's why you can't eat your lunch whilst driving.

Out of interest Joe what do you drive, a manual transmission or an automatic.

I've driven manual for nearly 40 years. It's just that if you live in other countries - they all drive automatics.

Remember, all cars were once manual - I just don't see why most continents adopted automatics apart from Europe.

I realise that in the 70s we only had 3 gear trimatic auto gearboxes that didn't suit a hilly terrain - but the new breed of autos aren't like that.

It's time to move on like the rest of the world.

But thats just is, they dont....America drive more automatics because of when fuel was so cheaper, and still is over there. The fact they have vast open spaces and roads, they like to big build big engined vehicles.

You will notice also in America, advanced drivers will drive manual, not automatic. Same for sports cars and all terrain vehicles.

Europe, Asia and most developing countries all favour manual over automatic.
