Hi,

I am a complete novice when it comes to diy and wanted some advice on whether I need a plumber or an electrician first!

Yesterday there was a loud pop and the electric went off at the fuse box. I flicked the trip switch back up and everything came back on. Today I have gone to use my washing machine and it wont switch on. Remembering the loud pop yesterday I have pulled the washing machine out and found the fuse has blown. There is slight black dust marks but nothing excessive and i could remove the plug and fuse without any difficulty. Ive tried changing the fuse and plugged the washing machine into a different socket but it still wont switch on...so I obviously do need a plumber to look at this...my question is do I need an electrician to look at the socket...what would cause it to blow its fuse when it wasnt even switched on?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

Am I correct in thinking the washing machine was plugged in and switched on at the wall but switched off on the machine itself when this happened?

It sounds to me like what you need is not a plumber or an electrician but a washing machine repairman. I suspect most likely a wire has come loose or some insulation has worn through in the machine and lead to a short.

Hi,

you may need a washing machine engineer
my question is do I need an electrician to look at the socket
Does the socket not work?
what would cause it to blow its fuse when it wasnt even switched on?
A faulty component or cable within the machine, what condition does the flex look in. Any water leaks?

yes it was switched on at the wall but switched off at the machine and not in use when it blew.

I really wasnt sure if it was the socket or the washing machine that had caused it to blow. I will try a washing machine repair man. thanks for your help.

I have just tried my iphone charger in the washing machine socket and this works fine , there are no signs of water leaks where the washing machine was.

SO definately not a job for either an electrician or a plumber.

You need an appliance repair person that specialises in the make of machine that you have.

Time to dive into YELL.COM

Good luck.
