Potterton 30HE Fan/Flue fault? (Pic on Page 2)

On these there is 2 thermisters and they can be change in about 2 mins to check if faulty the one down by the plate heat ex is usually the faulty one and symtonsd are rapid on off after a few mins if it fails copmpletly it can be changed with the other one to get boiler up and running.
Personally i would say it is the board gone cost 70 quid plus vat so anything more than a ton for part and they are taking the P .
Themistor is less than a tenner

I was really weary when he said it was only the thermistor, it didnt sit right with the symptoms...plus he didnt want to listen.

What do the thermistors look like, could i change them round myself to get the heating going.

The PCB gone sounds not too far off the mark hence the continual on/off cycle that its going through.

Thermistor on left hand pipe (red wires ithink) sits in a dry pocket. Thermistor down by plate heat ex sits in wet pocket(green wires i think) ,just turn off cold supply under boiler and you get a dribble of water takes 2 mins to change them over

Just out of shot on left hand side with 2 red wires heading to it is one sensor. And just to left under gas valve with green wires is the other sensor, but if you cannot recognise them from my previous description i would suggest just leaving it to the guy

Ive found them both. So all i need to do to swap them over is to disconnect the wires from each, spanner the valves off, swap them over and reconnect the wires?...

As I already said they are not valves. They are temperature dependent resistors and look like this. They measure about 10k cold.

And retail about £15 each
All NINE of the nearest partscenter branches to me have them in stock.

Yes sure check the thermistors. But get ready to buy a new pcb because that's yer main fault.

Sorry Chris, yeah i did take on board what you said about them being sensors, the brass end to them just looks sort of valve like (sorry amateur me).

After reading various replies i suspected a PCB failure, i have to wait for this guy to come out and try and fit the new thermistor...pain!

Im guessing that a PCB failure could throw up some random fault indicators?? Would PCB failure also cause it to fire up then go out pretty much straight away and then try and fire up again??

I will swap the thermistors round' and see if it makes any difference and if it will give us heating in the mean time.

FURTHER UPDATE:

Have swapped the thermistors around with no change what so ever. I do not believe it is the thermistors that are the problem.

The boiler is occasionally firing up but then almost instantly goes out on other occasions it will fire up for a short time and start to heat the house before going out.

What am i to do now though. The guy from the emergency call out is going to come out to change the thermistors whcih do not seem to be the issue. I doubt very much he will have a PCB for this boiler on his van either.

What is puzzling me is WHY it is indicating a fault with the fan/flue...the fan is quite clearly spinning around and doing what its meant to.

I hope someone can advise me whats best to do. The nights are getting colder and these little portable radiators are no good :(

just about every faulty board i have changed on these shows the fan neon , so its normal... If you have a local parts centre or PTS they will have board in stock so you could buy one ready for him when he calls or phone gas apppliance spares 01772702755 on monday and part will be with you tuesday

I have installed and maintained CH systems for 40years for my self and family.I recently moved house.the central heating stopped.I then found out about pottertons reputation, and immediatley joined british gas home care before anything other happens seems the right solution for most problems

Did you evr ask what the problem was? How good is British Gases home care product?

Cheers for that.

Everyone else of the same conclusion?

Why not? I carry the things! Well only about one, so you might be unlucky...

Ah, that'll be because "it", the PCB, is Faulty!

I've got a Potterton Performa 28 which kept failing to operate giving me the fan/flue neon error - ChrisR correctly diagnosed a PCB fault. I'm with BG homecare - the engineer who came tried a new aps but after several other checks concurred with what Chris had said and ordered a new PCB. It was fitted the next day and has the boiler has been fine ever since.

It can be difficult on this forum to diagnose problems with some of the things we diyers describe but the experts are dealing with these things on a daily basis and have lots of experience. I respect their judgement.
