Hello folks,

Unfortunately I'm currently living in a modern house (c20 years). This entails trying to hang pictures on those walls which sound like hollow wood when you tap them, and thin wood at that.

Can someone please tell me what is the most secure way to hang heavy-ish frames on them?

Thanks.

M

Note to self. Never buy another modern house!

They sound like stud walls, you need to locate the studs (wood framing) and fix into them with wood screws.
Tap the wall and move along where the studs are the wall will sound less hollow, or buy a stud finder from a diy store.

There are a number of houses built with steel framed stud walls starting from about 20 yeas ago, but they are fairly uncommon, with some of them the whole sheet of plasterboard is just supported at the edges unlike wood studs and normal steel frames that have supports at about 14" (400 mm) centres.

Thanks guys,

what fixings do I need to use? I seem to think there are alternatives to rawl plugs, designed for 'hollow' walls. Are they any good?

Or you could use Spring Toggles, a bit old fashioned but reliable.

I would have thought decent sized Picture Hooks would work though,
for a very heavy picture you coud drill through the picture hook and fit a spring toggle to fix it to wall

Reviews of the plasterboard fixings are a bit mixed...

Plus I'm completely u/s at DIY. How would I attach a picture hook? Or would I just hang the picture on the end of the screw?

I like the idea that a decent sized picture hook would do the job - sounds simple. I assume we're talking about the ones which just hammer in?

Obviously it depends on the size and weight of the Pictures but if its an original Mona Lisa that wants bolting to the wall,
I would have thought heavy duty picture hooks that one nails into the wall would suffice,
or ones like these with rawlbolt/ Spring toggle fittings.
