Is there any reason other than aesthetics for going for one of the above type of tiles against the other type. Any advantages, longer lasting etc?

No, but some tiles of the same profile can be used at a lower pitch if they are one or the other ( I can't remember which)

The granular ones will help stop you sliding of the roof and you will need about 10 more degree's of roof to play with as opposed to the smooth ones.

Smooth faced tiles can be used on a lower pitch (more shallow) roof as there is less water capillary action under the headlap. They also attract less moss growth - smooth surfaces such as slates are not ideal for moss and lichen growth which thrives on rough surfaces. After a decade or so of weathering though, both tiles will have had their surface finish worn off and they are all the same underneath, just concrete.
