hi, I wasn't sure whether or not this thread should be posted in the building or garden forum. So apologies if I got it wrong.

Well this week I decided to sort the back garden out. Has anyone got any ideas what this pipe is sticking out of the ground? It was sticking out the gravel, so I dug around it and it appears to been concreted in?

It looks and feels plastic.

Can I dig it out?

Whatever it is, it is certainly plastic underground drainage.......it could be a vent, soil pipe or whatever.
What was on the site originally......do you know?
John :)

Have you got a septic tank?

Was there formerly an outbuilding?

Does it smell?

I'm not sure what was there originally. I do know the houses on our estate are only 17 years old however. Do you think it is safe to cut it shorter? and bury it? I'm planning on turfing the back that's all and its extremely ugly.

Cheers

It does not smell. Looks like the previous owners just stuffed old bits of wood in the top too.

Ah, there is a man hole cover further up between the house and this pipe. Do you think this is likely to be the overflow pipe? I really hope I can bury this ha ha

If it was mine, I'd unblock it just to see if there's a smell......I'd then excavate a bit more, cut the pipe short and then cap it off.
There's been something there before for sure and its probably connected to that inspection chamber.
If you can unblock it, there's no harm in tipping some water down there just to see where it goes.
John :)

Drains don't have overflow pipes.

Whatever it is it's blocked.

Could it be a stop tap?

mate has something similar concreted into his garden, every year he puts a big xmas tree in it :)

Looks like a soakaway overflow pipe to me. You can get soakaway tubs that go in the ground and have those pipes sticking up but usually they are smaller and have a cover over them to stop rain entering.

Either that or it's a bomb shelter lol
