you need to draw a line at the correct angle on the wall giving you the same head clearance as you go up the stairs
get to opposite the half way up the banister on the landing point then draw a level line back towards the wall
this gives the bottom off the platform you can build and turn into a cupboard
you will need a support from the platform top to ceiling above to attach the banister to and the sidewall off the cupboard then reduce the banister in height at the cupboard appeture

That sounds good, any chance you could draw a rough diagram showing that? Just so i can see axactly what you mean

I have this sort or cupboard in my head, or maybe bigger?

Obviosely a very rough drawing there, the lines on the face of it are shelves

That's exactly what I did years ago in my house Danturbo - use the bannister as support. :notworthy:

the last one i made was about three times as wide removed half the banister height to maximise room [removed all the banister and replace with a supporting frame]
if its at banister height you loose a bit off capacity
the floor was a frame made from 4x2" in an oblong screwed together screwed to the back wall and banister infill frame so strong enough to stand on

Thanks guys i have an idea in my head now of how to go about it so will give it ago.

you need to plan what's going in there
because its over the stairs the cupboard depth will be the same or a bit less than the landing so if you slide something in full size you need wiggle room so don't plan too tight also if you need to use a ladder it will restrict what you can get in the cupboards when its in the way
if you have doors will they clear any light pendant when opening
if you make the shelves too close together things can easily get lost at the back off upper shelves
