Hi All

Are third party furniture warranties by stainguard/Guardsman worth the money. I have bought a new 3 piece suite the other day. Salesman brought warranty up time and time again. So far I have declined. He put on this on invoice "customer declined stainguard warranty". Today I received a letter from store manager saying I am a good customer of theirs but I have overlooked the guardsman warranty. Are the warranties any good. Any diynot members came accross this.

Thanks in advance

Personally, I never take out an extended warranty on anything I buy. Too many 'conditions'. If it goes wrong, get someone in, is my policy.

Aren't warranties around 20% of the cost of an item.

Therefore, not buying any warranties means you can afford to replace one item in five if the need arises.

I always think that trying to sell an extended warranty at the time of purchase is like saying 'well the product won't last more than a year so you had better insure it.' Obviously a bit different where staining is concerned as it is due to an accident.

The assistants get commission on the warranties.

Looking at the first two review sites that came up says it all: the first, Guardsman's own, had good reviews; the second, Trustpilot, had a large majority of poor reviews. Quelle surprise!

We bought two sofas and took our Guardsman cover. A short time afterwards, the cat was sick on one of the sofas so we called Guardsman. Their response was to offer to send us some cleaning fluid, which I rejected adding that we hadn't paid over £200 for a bottle of cleaning fluid.

After some discussion and insistence on my part, they decided that they would send a representative. He duly arrived and successfully cleaned the area, then left us his card. It turns out he was self employed, but we kept his card for future reference.

I think Guardsman's initial response stinks and there's no way we would use their 'services' again. Employing a professional cleaner would probably have worked out much cheaper anyway. We live and learn.

Yes they do. Most of the warranty cost goes as profit. That is why Currys et al love them. In fact I think warranties make up a significant proportion of their profits. Special car polish is the same. It costs peanuts to the garage. But they'll push it hard on a new car sale. I'm sure it's just a bit of bee snot in a tin.

Thank you all for your rapid response. I searched web this afternoon. Stainguard and Guardsman warranties are sold through retailers only. I spoke to a independant upholstry repairer/ cleaner. He said he will spray my suite using high pressure sprayer for £60.00 and the coating will last 3-4 cleanings. This could easily last a long time. I have also priced a motor for recliner that will cost £195 for complete package (motor and transformer). The frame and springs are covered for 10 years. I think its a joke. If I were to claim frame or spring defects in 8-9 years they will probably bring wear and tear crap up. As some of you have suggested it makes sense to go private if a problem occurs. I had a good look under neath the power reliner chair before I bought it. There is not much inside. I think I will give stainguard a miss and opt for local upholsterer.
