They are galvanised steel, you will need to touch up any bare areas with a zinc phosphate primer, Johnstones do a quick drying one that's pretty good.

Thanks for the reply is it ok to use dulux metalshield primer with the weathershield u/c and gloss or does it have to be used only with the metalshield system,if so is it ok to use a different brand of primer as suggested(johnstones),with dulux weathershield as I don't think dulux do a zinc phosphate primer other than the metalshield one

That Dulux metalshield is a zinc phosphate primer, it should be ok under the weathershield system although Dulux do specify to use their metalshield gloss.

So a different brand of primer is ok to use with dulux if I can't use the metalshield one

Crittal windows are a bit like Artex and Bri-nylon sheets, aren't they?

Someone obviously thought they were a good idea at the time, but they are to good design what Angel Delight is to human nutrition.

Yes as long as it is suitable for going over galvanised steel, zinc phosphate is the best for this. Crittall have always stated that any decent oil based undercoat and gloss is fine for their windows.

I once read that a burglar said that they were the hardest windows to force open and if he saw a property with Crittall windows he would give it a swerve.

Plus, I suppose the condensation dripping down Crittal windows makes it hard for a burglar to see what's worth nicking inside. However, an effective intruder alarm allows you to have well-designed windows and not be burgled.
