Hello while out in the garden I noticed a white growth on the monkey tree I am not sure if it's fungus or not. I was wondering if anyone coukd explain what it is and what to do about it as I don't know what it is I am not finding much on Google.

I have attached a picture so you can see what I am talking about its on the left of the tree.

Thanks

James

Id suggest Armillaria. Excessive nitrogen (and probably watering too?) making soil conditions favourable for the honey, the wet dark decay at the base on a monkey puzzle is typical.

Is this the way to Armillaria ? I'm puzzled.

Ah right I would go with potential watering since its constantly raining and the soil is clay soil. I am hoping to sort this out with some gypsum to help with the aeration and the drainage. Would this help?

If not what can I do to help I am turning the soil as often as possible to help dry it and aerate the soil.

Thanks

James

Found this on the net.

"...If you see a webby substance between the leaves, you have spider mites on the plant. Isolate the plant and move outdoors if necessary. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil"

And this ?

"...
Keep the soil moist. Caring for a monkey puzzle tree includes monthly fertilization with a balanced houseplant food. Use a micro-nutrient spray once or twice yearly. When growing monkey puzzles in containers, you may notice new growth that is pale in color. This indicates that more fertilizer is needed. Stop feeding monkey puzzle indoors during winter months to allow for a period of dormancy.

Do not prune growing branches when caring for a monkey puzzle tree. The exception will be when lower branches begin dying off later in the plant’s life. These should be removed..."

Scrape a small area of bark off in the affected area. If there's a white substance between the bark and wood, it's likely to be honey fungus.

Based on what you have said I should dig up the monkey tree? As its currently in the ground?

I also need to fertilise it from the picture (would compost not do this since its outside? I think and also I will have a closer inspection of it. I know I have seen a white substance on the outside of the plant if it is honey fungus how can I treat it?

Thanks

James

If it's honey fungus you need to dig up and destroy the plant. It may not be, though. It doesn't seem happy to me. That brown die-back seems a bit premature. Either it will die or it won't. Possibly not much you can do about it.

Ah right Well I found some stuff on the RHS website about it and they say to destroy it and it gives a list of things to look for which I will do when its not battering the ground with rain every 2 seconds :)

If I find it is honey fungus then I will grab my spade and get it out of there and destroy the plant and throw any soil around the plant away to limit the spread.

I had a look and it was honey fungus so I have taken the tree out now and removed the soil around it. I will be watching the plants around it for the next few months to see if any signs start with them. I am hoping not and that I have got it all now.

Thank you all for your very quick replies and your help its very much appreciated.

I know I wanted to keep it I was hoping to find I coukd just cut bits off or spray it with something or change the soil. I am quite sad it's gone I really liked it in my garden And it was nice to look at and looked nice in the corner.

I may get another one but I don't think the clay soil will help it though. So it may have to be something more specific to clay soil.

Thanks again

James

How does potting it sound? Just a suggestion.

I don't trust the soil in my garden to take care of my apple trees to be honest.

I went down to the local Lidl, and bought some Trugs for £3. They're growing in their own special soil, and drained well too. They get placed in the garage in winter, so it's all good! :)

Possibly yeah I would have to find somehwere for it.

The other half planted some Apple trees in the soil and one has leaves on it and has some white stuff on it so she sprayed that last night. I hope it's alright.

I like the idea so I will have a look around

Thank s again guys

James
