Homebase has removed all of it's wall saws from stores..

I wonder if this is a coincidece what with the stores poor financial performance and creeping bankcrupty?

Perhaps they no longer wanted to waste money training staff to use them?

Could have sworn the 8x4 was practically untouched from when I last went there in 2006

I agree, the last time I went into a Homebase down in Fareham (Hampshire), they had dedicated a section of the store to a "Mini" branch of Argos, well instead of catalouges and those little pencils (or pens), they all went "Digital" with Samsung Tablets to browse and purchase products that they stock, I suppose it is like anything, if they go to the Argos Section to purchase a Printer, for example, the company bosses will think that they would purchase a pair of pliers from the Homebase Section of the store. So, only time will tell on how this will work or I just a money-making exercise, don't get me wrong it is a great idea, but in the long run, how successful will they be? :)

I think people have finally realised that Homebase/B&Q are not the places to go when buying timber or sheet materials. It's just too expensive. Or maybe it's because the timber yards have finally realised that by being a bit more friendly and willing to cut materials for DIYers, they sell more products. A lot of people (myself included) used to buy sheet materials from the sheds because they sold manageable sizes which were easier to get in the back of a car or small van.

I still get my 4x2 from B&Q when building boats though because it's pre-curved and fits perfectly. :D:D

Homebase are useless. They need to sack the big boss and actually get competitive.

I wonder if those saws will turn up on ebay.

My local store never had anyone available to cut sheets anyway, so no wonder the stats will show it was never used.

Go straight to the manufacturer, Striebig offer refurbed vertical panel saws for sale (usually anywhere from £2500 - £10,000)
Proper boys' toy!

I've been to B&Q on several occasions to buy timber, but found that although they had the size I wanted, virtually every piece on the shelf was unuseable. The stuff was either split, warped, or both. Where do they get such rubbish wood from?

I use my local merchants now, and the quality and service is worlds apart. Not really any more expensive either.

the trouble you have is there timber is poor quality with perhaps 10% carp
now the system will bet set to restock at say 20 planks or less
so you start with 20 planks 2 are carp so get left behind you buy five the system restocks 10 so theres 25 planks
you now have 3 carp planks someone buys 8 planks
you now have 17 planks so the system orders 10 planks you now have 4 carp planks and 23 good
someone buys 10 planks so the system orders another 10 planks and you have 5 carp planks
eventually you have 100% carp planks on the shelves the system wont restock as theres plenty stock but its all carp
