I just wonder why it is free.
Have they something on it that will detect all unlicensed Microsoft programs, come on nothing is fee.
Maybe it will pack up in 6mths & we have to pay for the fix.
Or am I just being cynical.

It's free because it's full of spyware and backdoors used be the NSA most probably lol.

I won't be touching it because I can't stand the touchscreen apperance.

The loss of perceived functionality and control which came with windows 8 will only be improved on in windows 10 for the worst possible user experience.

It's make or break time, there will be those that turn their back on microsoft for good now, and I'll probably be one of them. Microsoft know this, that's why windows 10 is 'free'.

They've already retracted support for XP, and windows 7 will have it's plug pulled in 2020, so there we are.

I've installed it this evening. No problems with the upgrade (from 7) and everything seems to be OK in terms of drivers etc. I've just had to remap the standard user folders, and some Chrome browser extensions are no longer working - I think they need redownloading.

There is no lag, and the live tiles look good

The new browser is really quick and clean

And of course if after trying it you don't like it you can go back to Win 7, Win 8 didn't seem to be about long, what happened to Win9?

Yes, only if you decide you don't like Win10 within a month of the upgrade. Use it for 32 days and your stuck with it. (unless you have the original installation media)

It's free because Windows 8 was a dog's 'arse of an OS, in terms of the user interface anyway. Shame because it is in many respects very very good. Corporates have held back from buying Win8 because it is so bad, and this is Microsoft's way to get back respect.

I tried to install it tonight. Twice.

The first time, I had two different error codes, both relating to no internet access. I had to uninstall the network adaptor and driver and reinstall them to get it working again. Then the install crashed and it reinstated my Win 7.

Second time it was successful until it came to the second restart, when it came back with a "C1900101-30018" error code and reinstated Win 7 again.

According to the MS community site, they reckon you have to remove the graphics card and uninstall the driver, change your underpants, stand on one foot and put your right pinkie in a thimble-full of ghecko's urine and then it installs just fine.

As one guy there says, "They expect 1 Bn users to go through that rigmarole to upgrade????"

Another user reckons there is an issue with AVG. He uninstalled AVG antivirus and Tune-up and it worked OK, but does that not leave you vulnerable? Maybe I will try it...

Just finished installing it.

If you have AVG Tune-up, uninstall it and reinstall it after upgrading. As a precaution, I uninstalled AVG as well and enabled Win Essentials AV.

But thinking about it, my son upgraded his lappy from Win 8.1 to Win 10 with AVG intact.

You may find (like I did) that Cortana is inactive.

You need to ensure that the Languages are set up correctly, both keyboard and speech for UK English and the region matches. If these three things mismatch, Cortana will automatically lock out.

Go to Start, Settings, Time & Language, then Region & Language. You will have to download English UK as the default is US and it takes ages so go and have a brew, wash the car, go shopping and write a novel.

Then you have to make sure the UK speech settings are set up as well and lastly, check the region is UK (should be by default).

Then when you click on the search bar next to the start button you should find that Cortana is enabled (you will have to slide the switch to "on").
