Next to the garage is a wooden door that goes to a paved area where we store our bins. Yesterday, the bottom hinge came out of the fence post and took some wood with it. I can't simply rescrew the hinge back in - there's nothing to fix it to. I can see a long piece of metal that goes up the centre of the post.

I'm going to put a third hinge halfway up the door to help support the weight but what should about the bottom hinge?

Sorry. I should have posted up photos. It makes things a lot easier.

This is the top hinge. There's no middle supporting hinge.

I'm afraid that timber frame has had it's day, really......another hinge fixed to a solid part will do as a temporary fix, but do consider a new post.
As for the metal piece going up the centre........pass!

You could fix a timber to the front of post and re-fix the gate to that, adding a timber to the stop side to keep it in line.[But needs a new post as stated.]

I reused the bottom hinge and screwed it into the middle bit, which is better. It does still feel a but wobbly at the bottom and it really does need a hinge there. The problem is I looked at the timber post and the neighbour has a matching gate screwed into the same post!!
