Fibre cable from premises to street chamber, anyone?

Hi everyone, I'm currently undertaking major works to my home and as part of this I've had to dig up the existing copper cable and ducting that runs from the house to the street chamber (as an extension is being built in it's current position).

I've had an Openreach engineer come and do a survey and he advised me just to move the cable and put it back once done. My concern with this is that it's the crappy old copper cabling that was installed back in the 1960's - as BT are going to be rolling out FTTP in the coming months/years I'd rather install fibre from my home to the street whilst the place is a building site (future proofing).

My question for everyone is perhaps a bit technical but I hope there are others in a similar situtation:

1) Has anyone done this themselves and if so can you please provide details of products/companies used
2) If I were to pay Openreach to reconnect the phone will they replace the cabling "as standard" or are they just going to reconnect the old copper and charge me a fortune for the privilege?

Any help/advice much appreciated!

Thanks Owain, I had seen those before but they appear to be geared more towards larger scale property developers (i.e. building a new estate). I'll see if I can find someone at OpenReach who understands what I'm trying to achieve!

Openreach aren't going to put in fiber unless you order a product that needs it. Afaict FTTPoD orders are on hold at the moment (though this info could be out of date), so unless you order a buisness fiber product (expensive) they aren't going to put in fiber. Whether they reuse the existing copper cable or run new copper cable would probablly depend on whether the existing cable is long enough and what condition it's in.

I would just make sure you find openreaches specs on duct sizes, draw ropes etc and follow them so that if/when you do order a product involving fiber to your house the fiber can be easilly pulled in.

Everything you want to achieve is easily achievable, Unfortunately it WILL cost you!
(None of what I'm about to say is a 'dig' at you so please, do not be offended!)
Why is your 1960's copper cable crap, plenty of the BT main cable network is pre 1950's and even pre WW2 lead sheathed and paper insulated.
You wont find better quality cable?
Openreach will not change your ducting and cable to the first jointbox unless there is an engineering reason to do so (ie faulty cable length, damaged duct) just because you want to is not a reason. They will do it if you wish but they will of course charge for it!
You, and anybody you wish to hire to supply the duct and cable to the BT network better think again. You CANNOT just run new duct or cable to their jointbox and expect them to connect it. You have to be a licensed BT accredited contractor, do it off your own bat and you will be in a right old mess!
FTTP is slowly (very slowly) being trialled and stopped, trialled and stopped in selected areas.
You could of course have FTTP if you wish to pay. The last time (about 2 months ago) i looked the cost was £350 PER METRE and I am not exaggerating!
In short no, BT will not change anything without a valid reason unless they get paid!

If you've already had an Openreach surveyor out you're probably already paying the £300 survey charge? You can do what you like on your own property including laying some 50mm 'BT Duct 56'. Speak to your surveyor and see if he will supply you some duct and bends, etc to lay yourself. You will probably then have to pay Openreach to pull a new cable into this and connect it up in place of the original cable.

Once you've got the duct under your garden/fancy new drive any new cable including fibre tubing can be pulled into it without making any more holes.
