Hi, my brother in law has just recently taken on a small shop and I am doing the redecorating to get parts of the shop usable in stages, the shop is in two parts 8mx7m and 8mx12m.
Part of the shop that is not currently being used has a security alarm fitted, the alarm is powered but not set/activated. We may be able to get the last code used by the previous business but no guarantee.

I’m after a recommended procedure of how to disable / disconnect the alarm without accidentally calling the police or annoying people by setting the off the alarm, we may want to re-commission it at a later stage so no just cutting the cables.

I want to disconnect it because it’s not being used, the security sensors are not all fitted any more, and the power to that part of the shop will be turned off for extended periods while we sort out the rats nest of unlabeled cabling and redecorate.

I don’t know the modal of make of the system but I noted the following system elements:

Auto dialer above the main control box, phone line is believed not to be active?

Bell unit outside, must have a battery in it as it went off when I turned off the mains power momentarily, nothing is labeled in the consumer unit.

Main control unit, doesn’t have battery (or is flat) hence alarm sounding when mains power was turned off.

For a procedure I was thinking:

Find & disconnect phone line from auto dialer.

Remove/disconnect battery from bell unit outside.

Remove/disconnect battery from control unit if it has one.

Isolate control unit from the mains.

Hope the alarm doesn’t go off.

Thanks for your assistance.

Trevor

Perhaps give local police a call before you do it to save any hassle.

I wonder why no help was given? What a thing to ask in an open forum.

unless its an american alarm its going to make a noise whether you like it or not the moment you start messing about with it.

If its policed then you cant start to mess with it anyway and then reinstate later.
If its not policed, then you should know what you are doing before attempting to dismantle the system to cause minimum impact to your neighbours and your own protection.
No one should tell you how to disable an alarm, its just not the right thing to do.

I would say given that you know the panel battery is flat and you have already cut the mains the best strategy is have someone else cut the mains. Then open the bellbox and disconnect it's battery (wear ear protection). Then open the dialler and disconncet the phone line (which is probablly inactive anyway but best to make sure).

As if they are going to take any notice of that phone call, and how the h... are they expected to know who it is making that call?

Get someone in and do it correctly.

True if they ignore an alarm when safe deposit boxes are being broken into.;)
I set off an alarm once while wallpapering (hit the panic button with the paperhanging brush!) rang the local old bill and they did not seem at all interested!

Now you know no more about the ins & outs of that occurrence than was sensationally reported in the press.

I've a better idea what happened as 'I'm in the business'

I'm glad the 'old bill' took no notice of your call, just think about it.

Not going into this any further.
