Registration plates unreadable to Automatic number plate recognition

I've seen "Stealthplate" advertised and it does seem to work in certain scenarios, but more and more traffic cops have ANPR fitted in their cars to combat no tax, no insurance and any cars with a marker on them so I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be long before you're pulled over. Not sure what the exact offence would be and wether points would be issued but at very least your friend would need some deep pockets.

That's what I reckon as well. I saw one of those programs about police patrols where they pulled some guy who had one of these "unreadable" plates because the ANPR didn't read it.
Now I'm sure most of us keep our motors legal, but nobody wants a cop looking to see what he can find wrong because he thinks you're trying to trick the law.

I've wonder this for a while now ..... would it be possible to have several "reg plates" around the original plate, or similar looking sequence of numbers and letters, and would this confuse an ANPR unit?

The correct reg plate would be there to stay legal.

Covered under section 11 of the The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001

Further requirements for registration plates

11.—(1) No reflex-reflecting material may be applied to any part of a registration plate and the plate must not be treated in such a way that the characters of the registration mark become, or are caused to act as, retroreflective characters.

(2) A registration plate must not be treated in any other way which renders the characters of the registration mark less easily distinguishable to the eye or which would prevent or impair the making of a true photographic image of the plate through the medium of camera and film or any other device.

(3) A registration plate must not be fixed to a vehicle—

(a)by means of a screw, bolt or other fixing device of any type or colour,

(b)by the placing of a screw, bolt or other fixing device in any position, or

(c)in any other manner,

which has the effect of changing the appearance or legibility of any of the characters of the registration mark, which renders the characters of the registration mark less easily distinguishable to the eye or which prevents or impairs the making of a true photographic image of the plate through the medium of camera and film or any other device.

(4) Section 59(2)(a) of the Act (regulations the contravention of which attracts a level 3 fine) applies to paragraphs (1), (2) and (3) of this regulation.

A level 3 fine is £1,000.

I've seen somewhere that although those coatings work (if the light is right), you just flip to the negative of the image and they can be read quite easily.

I wouldn't bet on it - the rozzers around here seem oblivious / uninterested in the recent trend for removing the (front) numberplate altogether, and lying it on the dash.
Utterly unreadable while driving.
Back in the day, you'd get pulled over "just on the off-chance".............
