buy a few bags of plaster and keep trying until a plasterer shows up to quote. U might be a master by time they show up..

You'd think with all this country's recent 'acquisitions' there would be a surfeit of tradesmen. No, seriously, I think at least some of our 'visitors' have skills. Yet there always seems to be a difficulty in persuading anyone that they want the work.

Now on my 5th one. Even got to the point where one was definitely going to start in the morning at 9am - didn't show up. A total of six weeks and still haven't found one. Is it too much trouble to say 'Sorry, I am too busy?' One said he would come round at 6pm to have a look - didn't show up. Will call you tonight, will call you tomorrow - nothing.

I have virtually the whole house to be re-plastered but no one seems interested. Oh well.

Locksmiths too. My first wife was at her mother's in Bradford today (having been to France for a week and left her car in the garage). She couldn't get it to open this morning so called a local Locksmith. He promised he'd be there between 9am and midday. He wasn't so she called him back and received a promise that he 'might' be able to come this afternoon, so she told him to stuff it. She then called me to look in Which Local for alternatives. The nearest four were in Leeds, so she tried to call all four. Two had only answer machines, one said he couldn't come and the fourth said he could come on Tuesday!

If you are a locksmith on the right side of the Pennines, you could be quids in if you're prepared to work weekends!

Wow, you stay up later than even I do.

No, her mother asked a neighbour (who's built like the proverbial brick $hithouse) to help and he used brute force to break it open. My wife arrived home yesterday afternoon. She'd been on a coach from Frogland since 7.30am on Friday, and stopped the night at her mum's.

With all this immigration and transfer of skilled workers from Poland etc you'd think there would be plenty of plasterers around - but no.

On the other hand, I rang one up - he was here on the date\time agreed to and started a couple of weeks later & did an excellent job all in the same day.
A keeper :)
I'm in Rossendale Lancs if anyone needs to know who he is.

Was thinking about doing plastering myself but I'm still a little skeptical about the courses on offer and whether they are value for money.

I know not to bother with a city and guilds pile of shyte award, which leaves the private collegss who are generally pricey, and surely not long enough courses to pick up the required skills, some being a week or so long.

I had equally as much trouble but with carpet fitters, nobody wanted the job, could have done the job myself in the time it took to get mucked about repeatedly, and even then the finished job wasn't great for the money I spent.

There's always trial and error using DIY manuals and youtube videos.

Not normally but I think there must have been a party or something up the road so It all got a bit lively outside at around 2am. Just starting to doze off now.

city and guilds being a pile of shyte?really thought that was N.V.Q.s
also lead to believe that C&G's are meant to be making a come back.
but i stand to be corrected.

I took City & Guilds in plumbing and you are right, it doesn't mean a thing. For some reason people are still impressed by the little logo. My learning started with my first paid job. When you are on your own you have to learn pretty quick. Luckily for me, I had years of general experience in DIY. The Person that has taught me the most over the years is my dad.

I have another plasterer lined up for a visit today. Will he turn up?
What do you reckon?
