Hi I'm looking for a bit of advice/confirmation on moving a loft hatch. We have a 1950s house with a separate toilet by the side of the bathroom, which we will be making into one and the loft hatch straddles where the new bit of wall will go.

We want to move the hatch down (towards the light fitting) and slightly to the right as it currently goes through two joists.

Below is the current hatch from in the loft, from this photo we would put it to the right of the current hatch and up a bit so it only cuts through one joist.

Proposed place for new hatch.

Does this look ok? Is it alright to have the new hatch so close to the old one or would it be better to have it the other side of the large beam (sorry can't think of the technical term for it)?

Thanks in advance for your help

Hmmmm im going to be doing a similar job, but replacing the old hatch for a more modern insulated one, same place but the new one will be bigger...so i have to build a frame to accomodate it...Im just waiting for it to arrive before i rip out the old timber frame.

Ok well we've cut the loft hatch now and put in noggins to keep the structural integrity of the roof, just finishing off making a box for the new hatch.

Do we need to strengthen the structure of the old hatch where the previous joists were cut. We are going to put in two new timbers anyway to attach the new plasterboard but are unsure if it makes a difference as to where they go. My other half wants to screw them directly to the side of noggins (either side of the ladder in photo below) but I thought it might be better to put them at roughly a third across the hatch to provide more support, does it matter where they go?
