Hi,

I am trying to remove this ash tree stump from my garden. I have been going at the roots with a mattock and digging round it but its taking forever and it still feels solid. Do I just need to keep going or should I be thinking about getting a chainsaw or stump grinder?

Cheers,
robbo

Keep going with the mattock.

Once you've chopped through one of those largish roots you'll be able to pull up on it and make the stump itself start to wobble.

I can't exactly tell the scale from that photo but it looks much too small to bother with a stump grinder.

Ok thanks edecotp. Sorry should have put the measurements in. The diameter of the remaining trunk is 7 inches. The distance from the end of the left root to end of right root is about 2 1/2 foot.

A bit bigger than I guessed but still the right approach I think. Just think of all the calories you're burning!

Keep digging and cutting. The best tools for cutting are long handled loppers for the small roots and a sabre saw for the bigger ones. With either you can plunge them into the soil without too much digging. Cut the root near the stump and about 10" out and remove a section to allow you to keep digging.

Don't gt a chainsaw in there - they don't like dirt in the chains - an axe is a good bet if you can get one for £10 like I did @ a bootsale and sharpened it like a razor;)

You can dig that one out... keep going. Stump grinders are a last cosmetic resort for something that size ;)

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to report back that I got the stump out! I had bought some bits to burn it out but before doing so I thought it would be best to cut off some of the larger roots first with a saw and I suddenly found it started to move a bit. I continued to cut through all the main roots and then attacked it with a sledge hammer and it came out. Couldn't believe it. So chuffed!

Thanks for everyone's help!

Attached is a photo of the blighter!

Cheers,
robbo

Next time you want a tree removing leave about 4 foot of the trunk. The extra leverage is a wonderful thing.
