Ok I'll keep this as brief as I can. After several years in my house finally got round to papering, painting, dado etc hall and stairs.so the floor....ceramic tiles in good condition but totally clashing new colour scheme. Wanted wood but would have had to fetch them all up as threshold of front door slings quite low to existing floor (5mm) door upvc so can't be trimmed. Considered Lino but again same issue. So I was left with tiles. Decided to paint them. Used Leyland heavy duty grey following reviews online. Prepped floor, hoovered, cleaned with white spirit, sanded to key it up (although course grade didn't seem to make much of a diff). Applied paint, went on and covered well. Let dry 24 hours and second coated. Looks pretty good but I've noticed its scratching up easily, you could scratch it with your finger nail for example, so wife running Hoover over it isn't bearing up well!!! Can I or shall I 3rd coat ? Apply a clear vanish?? Or any other advice gratefully received !! Ps tiles were 12inch square ceramic but kind of textured, not totally smooth/flat. Cheers Rich.

You can't paint floor tiles.

Sure you can, as long as you don't plan to walk on them and you are selling the house in the next few weeks, before the paint wears away in ugly patches.

Lay wooden flooring on top of botched tiles, replace cr*ppy plastic door with proper door. Job done.

I looked into this as we have awful tiles in our porch. The whole thing needs ripping out and starting again, but we can't afford it just yet. So I looked at painting them, and leaving the doormat on top to take the footfall, just so they looked better. Silk purse sows ear etc! When you read online, some folk have reasonable success with it, but using the old painting system.. primer, undercoat then an oil based paint - then with varnish on top. Am not sure I've have expected a good result just using a couple of coats of paint without doing a primer at least.

As has been said, you can't really paint floor tiles. Wall tiles, yes, though they look rubbish.

Guys thanks so far. The issue is I've already painted as I felt it was my only option sue to door/floor height etc.is it worth considering clear varnish on top or am I wasting my time ? If so advice on product or brand would be great

Nope. You can't do anything other than lay vinyl.

Yes, put a good quality vinyl over them as a temporary measure until you can afford to re-do the lot.

you may find that it becomes more durable in time. It will always be susceptible to chipping though.

perhaps you could use a rug on the high traffic areas
