Hi, does anyone know what type of plasterboard that should be used in a shower with tiles over? That is the board will not be plastered, just tiles directly over.
thx

You cant put any plaster board in a wet area like a shower!! Check out Hardie backer board..

Most new builds I've seen tile straight onto plasterboard, never seen a leaky one yet.

You must be jokin joe!!! Noone I know would ever tile a shower on plasterboard!! Have seen it many a time when I have gone to redo it after it has leaked and fooked the ceiling below it up...

I've been in the game a long time and never seen a new build fail when tiled over plasterboard. By the time the grout leaks it's time for a refurb anyway.

OP,

As roy c & Burnerman suggest, dont ever use plaster board in a wet area - it defies common sense, and in California most of the local Building Codes.
Backer board is a first class backing for wet area tile.

The notion that house holders are happy to sit and wait for their newly paid for bathrooms to fail is bizarre, beyond a foolish suggestion its irresponsible to pretend to knowledgeable advice from what can only be considered a position of ignorance.
And thats ignoring the glaring elementary contradictions in the post.

FWIW: I've worked on tracts of thousands of new build houses - i dont recall a single one that used plaster board in wet areas.

It's just a fact mate. Get over it. We don't give a fook what you do in california.

Who is the "We"? Only three other respondents have replied to this Post, and none of the three agree with your claims.

Mmmm ... i am sorry that you have to resort to profanity as your version of a technical answer. Perhaps thats how you define facts?

The kind of plaster board you refer to was first developed and sold by US Gypsum about 100 yrs ago. The computer and internet you are using right now was developed in California. The microprocessor that's been called the engine of the world was invented in California. Just saying.

I haven't given an opinion you dope. All I said is that I have never seen a problem with plasterboard used in new builds of the nineties. Read what I write, not what you think I wrote. It isn't really an issue. If your shower tray isn't leaking you won't get a problem. Get over it.

I've ripped out plenty of perished board.

Use water resistant boards. Gypsum products readily soak up water, only a fool would use them in a shower.

stevethespreader,
Thanks for the query but, with respect, i'm not blanking you but i prefer not to talk about my personal life. If you've got any questions about the US building trade or working in the USA i'd be glad to try and answer them.

I don't think he's there. He was originally the banned poster dann09.
