having watched my sparky spend hours hammering cable clips in it seems like a huge waste of time. Has no gun been invented that does the job? I've read about various staples, the arrow t72 being reasonably often mentioned but not well rated, that fire staples suitable for T&E but somewhat amazed in the age of the nail gun, collated screws, push fit all sorts, etc that cable clipping is still a relatively tedious affair

The other thing I wondered about, in terms of labelling circuits, is there a sort of rotary stamp that the wire could be pulled through and it would stamp a code on the wire at regular intervals? If not, what other tricks do you use for la elling wires, or is it a case that you just judge by wire thickness and where it is found in the house (I suppose labelling is only really needed at ends but it may make extension easier in future if all wires were labeled along their length , no?)

It has to be tedious to be done carefully without driving a nail through a cable. Without care a nail could be driven through a cable and damage the conductor but unlike a nail into a gas or water pipes the installer would not get any indication of the damage to the conductor.

Bernard how would you not know you've put a clip bail through a cable?

OP surface clipping is quite rare now, ego tube, trunking, conduit, cases (with double cut chase machines) are more common.

The few times I surface clip I find it quite relaxing to dress the cable, tease the mbr and clip evenly (every hammer length).

I can't remember who, may have been Makita, but someone did come out with a cable clip tool several years ago...it cost more than £500 and the only clips that fitted into it had to be bought from the tool manufacturer and they costs about 5 times the cost of normal ones.... Killed by economics....

Gas.. Cool, now it just needs a collated strip of clips and a slot in the dangerous end within which to align the cable so as to avoid damage.. Or better a few different ends for different cable thicknesses to get the alignment perfect

Any thoughts on the labeller? Is it even pointful to label a cable along its length with its purpose?

Thinking about this again, I'm gonna see if I can label my cables with colour coded stripes just by using a few sharpies and drawing a line across the entire neatly wound reel, before I unwind it

Yes you can get labeler machines, however most will just label the ends.
You can get slip over rings of numbers, tags to write on or even adhesive tape with numbers or characters on.

You will get tired of the sharpie thing like that, esp when unwinding the length you need. Just write on the cable every now & again what it is - using a sharpie is all I do - write on the grey outer to identify the purpose of a cable and at points under the floor where I may need to know what the cable it I will also mark it but it's pointless doing it where you will never see it.

Use a fine point sharpie, not a big marker.

Not only nails Bernard, gas fitter managed to drill through cable for outside light at mothers, cable surface mounted and in view.

I once hammered a nail clip through a surface pyro.
It was layed in the groove of the skirting board with about thirty years of paint over it
