What is Vettel whining about?

So, his tyre gave up earlier than he thought could get away with.
If it would have gone another three laps, would he be whining at the next race, when it popped three laps later, but still two laps too soon?

Genuinely interested in what I've missed.

Initially I felt the same way as you, I thought Seb was being a big baby because Ferrari took a risk and it didn't work. But after a bit of reading I just think that, much like Honda with their engines, Pirelli just aren't on top form this season.

Apparently Paul Hembery, Pirelli motorsport director, is under the impression that the tyre had come to the end of its wear life, and that drivers exploring more of the track and kerbs is the cause for this. Seb has then come back at him saying that Hembery gave the tyres a life of 40 laps, when it failed after just 28....

I dunno... I think F1 should go back to Bridgestone! :D
 
I think they should be free to use any supplier they want. Is that not what competition is about?

However, Vettel probably needs reminding that it is meant to be racing, not colour-by-numbers. On a tyre that might be sensitive to cuts, don't rag over kerbs and expect no consequences. Also, Pirelli are INSTRUCTED to ensure that their F1 tyres degrade at a high rate, to make pit stop strategy a key component of the event.

Depends how you define "competition". Best driver? Best car? Best add-ons?

Exactly, long gone are the days when it was a bunch of teams, each with a bank account and a bunch of sponsors: When teams could pretty much do whatever they could afford (within certain limits). I wouldn't say that new technology isn't pioneering F1 like it would have once upon a time (massive ground effect fans, the Tyrell P34) because hybrid power units and ERS are huge leaps in technology IMO.

I personally would like to see a resurgence of some old ways in F1, like re-fueling, manual gearboxes would be AMAZING, larger capacity engines (albeit still technologically advanced and efficient/low emissions, etc. probably using forced induction still)

Fundamentally something that better shows that the drivers are racing cars and not so much computers...
 
It does seem F1 shoot themselves in the foot they tell Pirelli to make tyres that degrade but then the drivers complain when they do. It seems to be the same with everything that F1 impose on the sport, leads to drivers complaining and fans getting annoyed. I've been watching Indy Car this season and much preferred it, none of this over the top controlling by the management and cars are able to race each other without having to make sacrifices for tyres or fuel or anything else. Just watching the pit stops in Indy Car is fantastic, it shows how tame F1 is now.
