Hi my sons car cut out and wouldn't start back up, he says battery light came on n car cut out while driving, it doesnt turn over also plenty of fuel in and battery seems ok, any ideas before taking it to garage,it's had a 2nd hand engine fitted few month back and new timing chain but has been fine until now cheers

Well if it doesn't turn over and the battery light was on beforehand then the battery's probably dead! Cause likely a faulty alternator.
How far did he travel with the light on? 40-60 miles is probably the max.

The battery light only came on as the car was cutting out, there's power to lights n wipers, battery seems ok, when I said it doesn't turn over, I mean the starter doesn't kick in. But what's puzzling is me is if it was starter then that wouldn't cause car to cut out, also it won't bump off, green flag bloke said timing chain gone, all he did was turn key but after he left I turned key and you could see cams moving so surly can't be timing chain
Some conflicting info here.....the battery may have enough juice to run the wipers etc but not to turn the starter....have you tried a jump start from a donor car?
The timing chain hasn't parted, but thats not to say it hasn't slipped.....Green Flag man not too helpful, methinks!
It could be an immobiliser fault I guess, but thats all it is.

Are you mixing terminology? You say there isn't enough juice for the starter to kick in but when green flag left you turned the key and saw cams moving? You can't have one without the other, or did they just move a bit?
Is the starter motor turning the engine over?
Does the spanner light come on when you turn the ignition on? Does it extinguish after a while, or stay there?

Is the car an automatic by any chance? Weird as this sounds, check all the lights are working, including the reg plate one. I've now heard from two different people about automatic Corsas refusing to start due to a bulb out.

Seriously... a guy at my work who knows what he's doing with cars came across this. Some Corsa he was fault finding on wouldn't start (although I can't remember the details ie if it would/wouldn't turn over etc) and after replacing the non-working reg plate bulb the car was cured. Then just last week I overheard him telling another colleague about it in relation to his (or his mother's etc?) Corsa which also had problems - and he made a point of asking if it was an auto. A couple of days later the 2nd colleague said he had been right enough - he had replaced a non-working rear bulb and the car was cured. Both Corsas were automatics.What's this about, Alan?

Bit of an update 2nd hand engine that was fitted is knackered ,looks like it's done way more mikes than I was told ..live n learn
I spoke to the guy at my work today. The car he was working on wouldn't turn over and had EML on and showed a cam sensor fault. He changed the cam sensor which cancelled the EML and enabled the engine to turn over but it wouldn't start. After much head scratching he eventually came across a guy who had recently been on some course and he said to check the brake lights. Both brake bulbs were out and when replaced the car started. He reckons the Corsa was about an 03 plate, and deffo an auto.

Our manual diesel 51 Corsa suffered an EML when both brake lights failed together on holiday. It was weird to diagnose as there were a few seconds of delay, but i eventually figured out that the light going off coincided with my pressing of the brake pedal.
It still started though.
