Evening all,

Would like to know something thats bothered me for a while and I can't find the answer anywhere.

When pitching a roof with rafters why do some chippies keep the top plumb cut lower say 30ish mm and other chippies put the plumb cut flush with the top of the ridge board?
Proberly a very simple answer but I can't find it anywhere

Thank you

Dunno other than the fact that they used to use thin (floor board) sized timbers and there was a risk of splitting wth the higher plumb cut fixings.

It makes no odds structurally. As long as the ridge board is deep enough to collect the whole of the plumb cut, then it's job is done.

We always go flush and use the ridge-board edge as a guide.

My take is: For the same reason that the last tile lath is kept back - to allow the ridge tile to sit low and comfortably over the ridge and not be perched high - esp. if there are hips.
