So, I have just bought a block splitter on ebay, I knew the bottle jack was faulty, I have just stripped down to find the problem, and have found the spring in the picture inside where the oil should be, no where obvious where is should go. It looks like it is still original shape and size. Confused and can't find what bottle jacks errut use

The coin is a 5p to give an idea of size, and I think it is a 20t jack

Could be the valve spring which allows Hydraulic fluid thru and then seals as the pressure builds when pumped, without it the Hydraulic fluid will just pass from one chamber to the other without building pressure to create the power to split the log.

Or the pressure release valve which is opened to allow the jack ram to return? Pumping in that case will just return oil to the reservoir.
There will (and I'm guessing) be some way to get at the valves. Sometimes they blank off ports in the base with screws.
One other thing is you need to be clinically clean with hydraulics. Any dirt at all in there and you will get non-seating valves and premature wear.
Can you adapt another similar size jack to fit?
