The old one, which is broken, has a 15mm threaded brass base. All new ones I can find are 22mm, and don't fit through the hole in the base of the close-coupled cistern. I even ordered one from Amamzon marked 15mm, but it doesn't fit through the hole...... Am i going mad? Should it be this hard?

15mm threaded is probably 3/8 BSP - the 22 ones are 1/2" BSP . If you can't get the right size you might be able to bush UP in size inside the cistern.
