Land line phone not ringing

Hi all,

I've read through some threads on this, so just after confirmation really.

Our house landline phones don't ring when someone calls. I've tried other known working ones with the same result and I can dial out OK. Also, if I phone the house number from my mobile and answer it, everything works fine. The phones just don't ring out. Internet is also fine.

So, following previous advice, I disconnected everything and removed the master socket front plate (I know, I know...) and used my multimeter as follows on the line:

No calls measures 48 volts dc
Incoming call measures 0 volts ac
Same Incoming call goes to voice mail measures 105 volts ac

So I presume I'm OK to call out a BT engineer safe in the knowledge that the fault lies in the exchange and I won't be charged?

Have you tried plugging a known good phone into the socket that is exposed when the front of the master socket is removed ?

Is all internal wiring connected to the front ( removable ) part of the master socket and nothing connected to the fixed part of the master socket. ?

Thanks for your reply.

1. Yes - removed front of master and plugged in known working phone. Still no ring.
2. All internal extensions are from the removable front of the master socket.

In which case almost certainly a fault on the line card at the exchange.

Not following this - When you call the line so that it should be ringing, do you see a.c. voltage across the line or not?

Hi pbc,

No, there is no voltage across the line when a call is made. When the answering machine kicks in and 'answers' the call, I see 105v ac.

Update - BT confirmed it was a fault at the exchange and everything is now back to normal. Thanks for the advice.
