Good evening,

Long time reader never had much posting to do!

Am looking for some help to pacify me more than anything! A structural engineer will be coming to do calcs for this work and a builder will be completing... I just want some ideas and hopefully some reassurance!

We are undertaking a kitchen refit in which we have had a utility room removed. Our builder / kitchen fitter had formed the opinion the walls of the utility were not load bearing - however when they came down they revealed the end of a large RSJ (which now has a prop under it!).

It is clear I am going to need something to support the end of this rsj however I would really like to avoid this being a pillar (or wall... hence why we took it out) not least as it would be in the middle of the new island!

A builder has taken a look and has suggested an rsj running the width of the room - supported by the two external walls, positioned under the end of the current RSJ - this is to then be boxed in. This is not ideal as I dont really want a hole in the side of my house and I dont really want a boxed in lowered section where I had planned the island lighting. I also have concerns that this does not address the support the floor joists previously stiffened by the wall as opposed to the RSJ.

Is it possible to join an RSJ onto the existing RSJ and continue this down the length of the room at the same height - cutting into to the now unsupported joists? Would this also need support with something running across the room and if so is there any chance this could be joined at 90 degrees to the current rsj to save it being underneath and boxed in?

Hopefully the attached diagram (a modified lighting plan) will outline the issues more clearly. The blue lines show where the walls used to be! The existing rsj is the oblong 1.8m from the wall. What I can see of it is 4.9 metres long - it disappears into a breeze block wall between kitchen and lounge.

If it helps the current RSJ is 205mm x 205 I profile 12mm thick. The joists are 220mm x 50mm at 400mm intervals and run across the width of the room.

As I opened with there will be a structural engineer to discuss this with and do all calcs - but it is a week away and it is driving me insane!

Thanks in advance.

Jon
