...well, north west. Manchester to be specific.

A mother and her 7 year old son kneecapped on their own doorstep. fifth shooting in Salford in a week I believe. Wonderful society we're becoming/have become.

Half the problem is no plod around on the beat these days. The ones that are around are too busy catching speeding motorists...

Yes this sort of behaviour was virtually unheard of back in the day when we had police on the beat.

When I lived in Manchester (quite a few decades ago) the police in that area were the first in the UK (I think) to carry weapons in their cars. They required authorisation before they could be removed from an onboard gun locker but it meant that they were already on-scene without the need to return to the armory in the event of an incident.

Nothing has really changed except the victims have changed gender and age.

Probably related to Paul Massey's murder earlier in the year?

I agree.
Not only do we need more policepeople, we also need a proper penal system that offers some sort of deterrent.
Whatever happened to hard labour and the birch (to say nothing of the hangman's noose)? To put it quite simply the lack of any meaningful punishment has done nothing but encourage crime.
The people who advocate this soft system are the ones who never come into contact with the realities of life.

As is the norm..
It's politicians - need we say more. They are largely unaffected by their decisions and actions - remote from the general public.
Can refugees / economic migrants afford to move into their leafy suburb? - NO.
Do they care if the NHS is struggling? - NO - they can afford to just go private.
They all need a reality check!

I've just been reading comments related to this on another forum.
It appears that Anthony Wedgewood Benn once announced in parliament that if people were not listened to they should RIOT (he shouted this last word).
I believe there is a distinct possibility that this will one day happen, because people are increasingly fed up of being ignored and of banging their heads against the wall to no effect.

Conveniently, the government have reduced police numbers so how they'd intend to handle large riots I don't know. I reckon that displays just how short-sighted they are.

And what do you suppose the other half is?
The righties would typically blame the "hand wringing, guardian reading do-gooders", whoever they are supposed to be.
The lefties - who cares what the lefties think eh?

My guess is that it is third generation home grown poorly educated chavvy dole scroungers, having easy access to cheap recreational drugs, thinking it would be a good idea to start selling the junk. Unfortunately, turf disputes in their world are settled with violence.

More police on the beat is not the solution. It would be a one in a million chance if they stumbled across and managed to prevent retribution crimes like this. I'm pretty sure that JBR and his gang don't want their tax money going to babysitting sink estates and slums around the country

This kind of behaviour has been round forever as you say but the difference is that gangs kept the violence within their own circles or if some individual really p*ssed them off. They didn't go around kneecapping women & children.
