Windows 7 or Windows 8?

PLAY SAFE!! Make sure you can get all the drivers (for Win7) that you will need before upgrading. Go into Device Manager and find the PCI\VEN "code" for each of your hardware items - Graphics cards and Network adapters especially. Then do a Google search for Win7/64 drivers. Once you KNOW they exist, you can download them to a USB stick and have them ready. The number of times I have been given a PC which needs drivers for the "new" OS and the owner can't "find" them is, well, even at a tenner a time, I would be rich!

The major problem with Windows 10 is that an Administrator is not a REAL Administrator .
Another major problem with Win10 is the damn updates. You can set it to notify you when updates need installing, but I don't think there's any way to actually stop the updates downloading in the background. Win 10 also doesn't always install updates for drivers the way the manufacturers would like them installed. Only last night Win 10 told me it had downloaded new drivers for my Nvidia graphics card. I stupidly allowed Win10 to install the drivers. After the installation, I got the notice "Windows needs to restart for the update to take effect." Re-started my computer only to be met with a totally black screen straight after login. After chucking the missus off her computer and doing a bit of research, I thought I'd do a system restore, but re-starting my computer met with the same black screen. Re-started in safe mode (what a bloody palaver, you have to use the command line to reach the program that makes it start in safe mode) Once safe mode was selected, it asks for your password.. Ahh, not the numeric password you set, but the password for your Microsoft account (yep you'll have to remember it, and it's no good if you've forgotten it, Microsoft can't give it you as they don't have access to it (or so they reckon) ). All in all a horrific experience. Microsoft Tech help (online) only want you to phone their help number.
Luckily I remembered my password and managed to restore to an earlier time, then I installed the new Nvidia driver using Nvidia's own installer and now all is working again.

Useful information. Thank you.
It looks like another 'bug' that MS needs to sort out with their new, all-singing all-dancing flagship OS!
I think I'll continue to hang on for longer, thank you!

I've downloaded the drivers listed on Dell's website for the configuration in my lappy - is that enough?

I've heard a lot of bad things about Windows 10 - one of my friends downloaded it, his computer went on a go slow so he rolled back to his previous OS - sounds like a nightmare.

Let's be honest here - there was nothing wrong with XP!! LOL

After some research last night, there is a way to turn off automatic updates, but it means getting into the group policy part of the system via the command prompt. Only problem with turning off updates is, you won't get important security updates. (and whilst Win10 is relatively new, you can bet virus programmers around the world will be targeting it) ;);)

My only issue with 8 and 10 so far is that a newly purchased wireless hp printer no matter what i try loses communication with the computer.
Im still trying to find a solution but it is a common problem, not a huge issue i know but a very annoying one.

Well, my WIn10 f***ed up big time last night. Turned on my computer and once up and running (limping) Edge and any of the programs in the taskbar wouldn't run. Had a look on Microsoft forums for an answer and followed a (possible ) solution from a Microsoft expert. Big mistake.. When I restarted my computer, it came up with the screen "Windows is preparing your computer,, do not turn off." 3 hours later I had to turn it off. Today, same again, so connected my Win7 computer up, downloaded Win10 ISO and burned it to a dvd. Used this to restore my Win10 computer to an earlier time and hey presto, it's now working again. This is about the third time in the past few weeks that Win 10 has thrown up problems. Since upgrading in August, I think I've had at least two or three problems per month. Well, if nothing else, at least I now have the Win10 ISO on dvd , should I have problems in the future.

One of my friends had a similar problem. I found a site that explained how to roll back to prior to win 10 which he did. I wish they'd stop flippin tinkering with things that were fine to start with
