Not long moved into a rented flat and to begin with the front door handle was unscrewed at both sides of the door! The landlord has screwed some new screws into the handle and now when the handle is turned, the latch bolt sticks in and doesn't automatically pop back out like it used to. I have to manually turn the handle to release the latch bolt.

Any ideas how to fix this?

It sounds like the handles are slightly out of line with the follower bar......that's the square bar that connects the handles together, passing through the latch at the same time.
Try some lubrication first - if that doesn't work then I'd carefully reposition the handles which may need the old screw holes to be plugged and new holes drilled.
John :)

try this if your brave, using the rubber handle of your hammer VERY GENTLY give the handle a slight tap to just ease the handle,(you may find that theres not enough timber to rescrew back without causing a right mess)sometimes just doing this is enough to square the handle up each side to get the latch to work correctly.
