Hi,

I have a small box room. I have removed skirting and substantial amounts of plaster has come away from the wall on three of the four walls, which I intend to build up with browning and re-skim. The plaster on the fourth wall came away entirely so I have attached 12.5mm plasterboard to it, over which I also intend to apply a skim coat, however there are gaps where the board meets the existing plaster walls, the ceiling and the door frame.

The gaps are mainly around 2-5mm wide, but in one corner and also above the door frame the gaps increase to around 5-10mm. Further, along the joint with one wall the gaps are quite deep.

I have a bag of Easi-Fill and a bag of browning, along with some joint tape however I note the instructions on the Easi-Fill state it should not be applied to air-dried material (presumably existing plaster).

So, my question is which compound should I use, Easi-Fill or browning, to the fill these gaps and should I also use the jointing tape I have?

Why dont you post pics of the walls in your room? From your description it might be best to remove all plaster back to brick and re-plaster but first, some pics please?

hi ree,

its merely the filling around the new plasterboard edges prior to reskimming that im concerned with. the remaining plaster is sound

In my view, its not a sound practice to start splicing in plaster board as a patch for solid plaster - it can lead to more work and sometimes further difficulties.

Anyway, cut the edges of the patching-in square.
damp down.
apply anything as a filler but keep it low.
then skim with board finish - you could first tape the board to the filler before skimming but dont tape the filler to the surrounding solid plaster.
Damp down at the square cut edges dont try to feather out on to a dry surface. Lots of pressure on the steel trowel.

Just use plasterboard adhesive. Wickes is best at less than a tenner for 25kgs.
