Now on to plan C for the fireplace multi fuel stove.. Think this is the final plan.
The builders opening is going to be rendered and then 12mm Hardie backer applied which eventually will be tiled with brick slips when my daughter can afford this (thanks to 'maltaron' for this suggestion).
What is the best adhesive for this (Screwfix if poss as local) or do I need to use screws. or both?

Also the panels are 1200 x 800 and the fire back is 1120 x 940 so will need to join this one. Any problems doing this?

Thank you very much.
Just thought. Make the joint vertical or horizontal?

Hardie's own instructions say their board should be fixed to solid wall with builder's adhesive (e.g. Gripfill) and mechanical fixings (ie screws and plugs).

Cheers
Richard

Thanks for the replies.
Just wondering though, if the builders opening is rendered is there any need to fit hardiebacker if fitting brick slips over that?

Wouldn't have thought so I would do one or the other, Hardies instructions may say gripfil, I have always used Drywall on masonry without problems. Gripfil has it's uses, levelling out uneven surfaces isn't its finest point and it does have a habit of not sticking very well to dusty surfaces.

Gripfil is tat. I rate it way down in preference of polymer adhesives and others.

CT1.

Gorilla grip.

Soudal - Fix-all.

Evostik - Sticks Like S**t.

Stixall.

Ex-foam etc.

We tend to use dry wall adhesive then supplement this with mechanical fixings once the adhesive has set. The board adhesive is ideal for levelling etc and act as spacers once the screws are fixed.

Why not just render with heat-resistant render then tile straight onto that? The hardibacker seems to be a rather superfluous step to me

That is the plan now. Render and possibly paint it initially ( my daughter is running low on funds) and apply brick slips at a later date if she still wants them
