I'm rather annoyed that I am being forced to upgrade to Windows 10. In my updates it says install Windows 10 which I don't want to do.

I'm happy with Windows 8.1.

No-one can force you to 'upgrade'. I have Windows 7 and am perfectly happy with it, but if I had Windows 8 (or 8.1) I'm sure I'd rather have W10. In my opinion, W8 is like Vista was - crap!

Having said that, my wife has W8.1 and says she has no wish to upgrade to W10. I have no idea why - neither, I think, does she!

This machine does automatic updates and I discovered today that it had unilaterally started upgrading to W10. But it had stuck at 75% and alerted me that an upgrade had failed.

It had also treated the W10 as an essential upgrade.

Whereas two "optional" updates to the current W7 had not been loaded.

I too like W8.1 and you do not have to upgrade to w10, it is optional if you check the screens; I will certainly not change until just before July 2016 when the 'Free' upgrade offfer ends by which time most of 10s bugs should have been cured.

Still no clear indication what happens after July 2016, as to what price , if any W7 / 8.1 users would have to pay.

You could stick with W8.1 for many years and still be safe with MS security updates, but its the old chestnut of what new hardware and software will work.

For MS site -
Windows 8.1 falls under the same lifecycle policy as Windows 8, and will reach end of Mainstream Support on January 9, 2018, and end of Extended Support on January 10, 2023.
