So, it's coming up to Christmas and if I'm clever I can put something on my Amazon wish list that people might look at and decide to actually get me.

I have a Makita BHP453 cordless drill that I'm perfectly satisfied with. It has a BL1815 battery. It's 18v. It's got LXT stamped on it. It's Lithium-Ion.

So, would I be safe in putting the DTD146Z Makita impact driver onto my wish list? The battery I have with my drill will work this too, right?

The Makita website is not totally transparent / easy to read... it just says "Lithium-Ion" for the battery type, but I thought there might be some other subtle factors at play... last thing I would want is for someone to buy me an impact driver body and then I need to get a different battery.

I realise that my battery is only 1.3Ah, but that's probably why I got the drill for less than £100.

It will probably work - one of our plumbers is using a DTD146 on a 1.5Ah or 2.0Ah battery (in any case, a slim one) without issues, although his battery life isn't stellar (but then again he isn't driving 5.0 x 100mm screws all day long like I can tend to as a chippie)

Today we had the plumber and his assistant on site. I took a look at their tools. They were using a DTD146 impact, a DHP453 combi drill and a DHP456 combi drill. Their batteries are all 2Ah and they have four batteries between them. They don't bring a charger to site and their batteries last them all day on pipework installation. The drill/drivers and impact drivers will all accept the full range of batteries according to the Makita website - it's the higher power draw tools (e.g. recipro saw, jigsaw, circular saw, planer, SDS, etc) which really need at least 3Ah batteries, or 5Ah in heavty trade use.

Nice. My drill is definitely a BHP453, not a DHP453... hoping that doesn't matter. Certainly batteries are not completely interchangeable across everything Makita does.

My old BHP452 will take the current Makita BL1850 (5.0Ah) batteries, whereas my BJV180 jigsaw will only take 3.0Ah or below OEM batteries. As far as I know the issues are to do with older "B" range models and newer 4.0 and 5.0Ah batteries only. Certainly the BJV180 has been borrowed by the plumber and worked happily on his batteries, so I can't see there being any problem. If you have any issues then it may be better to look at something like the Axminster copy batteries - their 4.0Ah batteries work on everything I've tried to date and I use one on the BJV180 regularly

Interesting. But I already have the battery, don't want another, really... I want an impact driver body-only that will work with it.
