Stairs newel post removal

I have stripped the paint of my staircase stringer and removed the spindles to allow me to have a glass balustrade fitted.
The problem i have is there is a newel post at the bottom of the stringer that i want to remove but am not sure if it is structural. i.e. is the bottom of the stringer likely to get its support form being tied into it? See attached photo for clarity.
Any ideas if i am safe to cut the post out ideally down to a level below the bottom of the end of the stringer, or do i need to leave it at least as high as the top of the stringer?

What is going to support the bottom edges of the glass? is steelwork being fitted?

Foxhole..look closely...the glass is bolted to the outer string face .

Jimmy 3, yes the newel post is structural, it supports the string, which supports the treads, take it all out and your staircase will list on this side and eventually collapse thus ruining your staircase and breaking the glass, out of curiosity why has the glass been fitted to the side of the string?

What is "supporting" the top of the glass to prevent it bending and possibly snapping if someone leans on ( or falls against ) the glass ?.

Do the fixing holes at the bottom have enough clearance around the bolt to allow for differential expansion between wood and glass ?
