Bought a new fan to replace an old noisy one.

It is even noisier. Sounds like something might be broken? From B&Q. Can I take it back even though already installed?

Watch and listen!

I'm no expert, but that sounds like the blades are striking something as they rotate. Can you operate the fan without the front cover and have a look - and maybe do another video?

Hmmmm, the noise starts as soon the power is on, and stops immediately to.

Your video doesn't seem to work. "An error has occurred. Please try again later."

I know. I'll try again later! (Tomorrow)

Ye gods, something is a mile wrong here......check that the fan backplate can go flush against the wall without the screws being tightened - it's dead easy for the plastic to distort and allow the fan to catch on the ducting. If it doesn't, pack the thing out with foam draught excluder strip.
You can check for quiet rotation without the fan in place, but as it's new there shouldn't be any problems with that.
John :)

Video link updated, should now work

AS burnerman said, face plate is over tightened on uneven surface or housing is distorted causing fan blade to strike edge.

OK. But, if that is the case, why is the fan silent, but still spinning, when the power is turned off?

What part is the faceplate? Do you mean the cover? I will see if it makes the same noise when it is all removed.....

Funny how the blades seem to strike something only when they are powered. When switched off, but continuing to rotate, the noise stops.

Sorry, you just beat me to it!

I wonder whether it could be the bearings. When the fan is under power, presumably there is more 'pull' on the surrounding air, pushing the rotating parts towards the inside of the room.
Possibly the same force is moving the blades forward just enough to strike something then, when the power is removed, it can ease back again away from the obstruction.

In any event, it is quite likely to be faulty and you should take it back.

I would have thought it came with at least a years guarantee,

So long as you have the receipt bnq will exchange it

The fan must be unbalanced to only make a noise when powered.Only to be expected of the poorer quality fans like Manrose.

Any recommendations for better fans?

When the fan is under power - it will of itself own violation try to move along it's axis - Like an aircraft prop, sucking and pushing.
End float and all that 'ollox which can result in a 'clunk' at start up as the prop shaft jerks against limitations to axial movement... Know wot I mean? 'Tis gonna attempt to move from the push side to the suck side, action and reaction and all that.
So when in action the blades are probably in a different position along the shaft axis than when stationary.
Fans are usually splittable ensure the location faces are ... locating ?? full circumference.
Else buy and fit a new bugger - almost cheap as chips, are they not ?
