Velux Window won't lock - please help

Hi all,

Can anyone help ?
I've an early 90's, (judging from the serial number) Velux Roof Window. It's a centre piovt and is operated by the 'vent flap' activating the 'locking plate'. Now this is the issue. For years it worked fine, then over time it became harder and harder to close and 'lock' in position. It seems that the pressure required to move the two, sprung loaded, locking pins has greatly increased, or the mechanism had broken.
So I replaced both the locking plate and the vent flap with new ones - Yet it still happens. Arrrggghhh.

It as if the opening of the window moves the sprungloaded pins into a position where they've 'gone' past the point of no return. It can only be closed/locked if spacers are placed to stop them before the end of their travel on opening.

Sorry it's long but it's an odd query.

Does anyone have any idea ?

It probably needs lubricating. Try getting some graphite powder and puffing it in the works.

Did you contact Velux - I know they have a really long guarantee so you might just be covered.

There is a serial number on the window itself have this to hand when you call.

I know someone in Ireland who got a window repaired free after 10+ years...

Worth a phone call anyway.

Bumping a reeally old thread but it was the first entry to come-up on an internet search and one of a very few. Putting this here as a possible fix for anyone in the future. Had the same problem 30 minutes ago and fixed it. Opened my 2 month old Velux and went to close it. Sadly the handle wouldn't allow the mechanism to lock.

Re-opened top-hung window and squirted some silicon spray into the locking vents at the top, then the 2 locking vents at the bottom. Handle still wouldn't move so turned the small plate on the bottom and front of the handle to expose the springs and workings and sprayed some lube in each side, re-turned handle plate into position and closed window. Windows's handle locking mechanism working nicely again.
