Had a quote today to do the following work:

1. To supply and install one new consumer unit in place of existing, complete with dual RCD.

2. To supply and install new 25mm tails to supply the new consumer unit.

3. To supply and install new 16mm earth cable.

4. To supply and install 10mm cables to the gas and water supplies.

5. To supply and install 6mm cable to a 45amp isolator switch adjacent to the cooker. To connect your electric hob to the isolator.

6. To separate as much as possible the cct's in the new consumer unit.

7. To test and certify the above work.

Was quoted £650. Is that reasonable for that amount of work?

If the work is done to a good standard, you are happy with the contractor and you are happy to pay that price then yes it's fair.

If you are already worried that this contractor is trying to rip you off then maybe he isn't the one for you or maybe you aren't the customer for him.

No one can quote you on here or see the job so a figure is not really representative of the job.

If in doubt get another quote for exactly the same and compare them.

Size of the bonding cable to gas and water is dependent on the size of the main supply cables (tails) coming into the consumer unit. As he's putting in 25mm tails he's correct in putting in 16mm earth cable and 10mm bonding cable.

Ask him how many days he'll be in your house. If two days then it's not worth haggling with him and not worth your time getting two more quotes. If he's in for one day then it's too much and spend the time to get two more quotes.

You should be building up a list of tradesmen you can rely on so if he seems a decent type with good attitude give him the chance to be your regular sparky.

Not enough info to say for sure.

How many circuits are there?
How far away from the CU is the incoming gas and water?
How far away is the cooker point from CU?
Who will be plastering up chases?

It's a good price.

Amendment 3 board glands, materials will be £150-£200

Full day's work doing the board fitting and local board work (tails, isolator, MET)
1/2 before work doing base EICR and 1/2 after doing certification and tests

Price is good.

Day rate of £120 is reasonable in Yorkshire. So £250 for labour and £200 for materials. Depends what the day rates are for the sparks in your area. I can also pay £200 a day for sparks, but know people who work for £120 and they are fully legit and decent.

£120 a day has to be a trade rate surely, I can get more than that on subbing work, if a member of the public approached me to do work and expected me to accept that they would be told rather quickly where they could stick it, the price seems fair but as everyone has said, impossible to say for anyone who hasn't seen the job, try getting another quote or two?

120 a day is subby rates around my parts, 150-180 normally for private work 200 should be the min really.

the price seems good to me, no body on an internet forum can tell you really what the job should cost. id rather somebody have the time and wage to do there job correctly then rush it. the testing alone should take alot of time up if done correctly.
