12v power supply
The Amazon flasher is cheap and easy. I used to make something similar with a LM3909 but I don't think I'd bother now! You can get a 12V 1A psu for a fiver and wire it up but you'll need to drill holes through your wall... Also, when you have a powercut, the bell will go off. 
You take out the sounder wires !
Use a self flashing LED and a 4.5 volt battery

Bernard, you'll need a big battery for the 10mA current drain - 88Ahr for the year?!!
If you make your own flashing circuit using a CMOS nand gate (4011) and use a high efficiency Blue LED and make it flash every two seconds for a very brief period, a 9v Alkaline battery should last you a whole year, and if you also add a jewl thief to the output of it it will last much longer.

I like BIG batteries.........
But yes it would require battery changes every few weeks. For the limited effect as a deterant is it worth the effort to have dummy bell boxes. ( or real ones with no alarm )
with sparkymarka 12V power supply, if the unit is tampered with or there's a power cut the bell will sound.
