I was wondering whether any1 has studied HNC Construction! I've recently enrolled on the course to study part-time via night school for 2 years. Can anyone advise any books to buy which will aid me or any general advice i.e how difficult the course was!

Is a good few years since I did mine, I've still got most of my books somewhere lol! The first 2 years were easy but it ramped up a bit in the final 2 years, in fact I failed and retook most of the final year, should have done a bit more revision in retrospect. As for books, the Chudley or Ivor H Seely books were good construction jobby's, prob best to ask the lecturer's what they'd recommend for the rest.

About 20yrs since I did my OND and HNC, things have probably changed a bit now but we also used the Chudley books.

Its sposed to be stand alone but I think you have hell of an advantage if your a brickie or carpenter as that seems to be the focus of the award.

As a deckie id have no chance IMO

Not at all, probably only about 20% of the entire course is building studies, the rest is contract management, surveying, science, project management, construction law, measurement etc.

whoooooaaaaaa, brings back cold shivers just remembering doing it over 20 years ago!

Chudleigh / Chudley was the bible so far as my tutor was concerned.
However I found being in the trade far more helpful than any material they gave us on the course.
Needless to say I abandoned mine after year one of a two year D.R course.
It did have some hugely useful elements - particularly in light of new Part L, DDA & the new CDM but it still doesn't really cover you for PI insurance etc. It's a good first stage in degree, professional quals etc but as a one off course it won't give you any more than a sound knowledge base.
We had a girl in our office doing one after I ended mine.
She couldn't hack the real world industry despite this course and left us and went off to be......

Trainee Local Authority Building Control Surveyor.

Reminds me of.....

Those who can't... Teach.... those who can't teach... Teach PE.

Love to see the jobs she signs off.....

Thanks for useful comments,

At the minute i'm working for a company that specialises in route provement for utility companies up and down the north-west. My passion lies within the construction industry hence the reason i'm starting this course, i'm determined enough and have a good grounding within construction although not actually a tradesman. At the end of this course i hope to become a contracts manager, i've already had a taste of this working for a shopfitter (cowboy) and it really interests me is this the course that could take me there!!! who knows perhaps i should wait and find out, at the end of the day i'm not paying for the course and after 2 years of studying i should at least get something out of it hey!

Thanks all and keep the comments coming

You're definitely heading down the correct route for what you want to do.
HNC is perfect for a contracts or site manager, it's a well rounded course on pretty well everything you'll touch on and you won't need any of your own PI / PLI so that shortfall is not an issue.
You may not be able to install plumbing pipework for instance but you'll be able to establish whether the sub contractor has done his job right, calculate falls etc. and haul him up on it.
If that's the job you want then stick with it, you're doing exactly the right thing, and if you're being sponsored then even better!

get a course in E. European languages while you`re at it  Respect is due.good luck ;)

Hi guys new to the site.
I have started the NC in Construction 1 day a week for 12 hours, 2 year course.
Has anyone done this course?
I have been in construction most of my life and i wanted to get out of getting my hands dirty, lol.
I have always wanted a more senior role but i must admit i am finding even the first assignment a bit difficult..
I have a lot of knowledge regarding different aspects of the construction proccess, maybe i am just getting stressed as the alst time i was learning was nearly 20 years ago.

Firstly hello to everyone,

Brue & Ingham, having completed my HNC 4 years ago and having finished my BSC Hons Quantity Surveying last year, I can tell you that you have nothing to worry about. The HNC was very rewarding to complete as it gives you knowledge of every constructional aspect - you'll come away knowing a lot about a little of each profession. (nothing too deep)

In my group we had a good diverse range of students, the majority were contracts manager (well wannabe's and design managers) very few architects and only 1 local authority building surveyor.

If you would like to see a few assignments to get a insight into the quaility expected then please do not hesitate to PM me with your email address. I came away with 9 distinctions, 3 merits and 2 passes.

The HNC is a very good stepping stone into a professional career whther that be as a site agent, surveyor or even architect (horrible word). I was however told that the HNC was being scrapped in lieu of a new age "Foundation Degree", the same level but sounds more impressive.

Anyway hope you both succeed and try to enjoy the opportunity as you'll learn a lot more. If I had to give any sort of advice I would recommend that you manage your time effectively as your expected to complete a lot of assignments in a relatively short time.

I hope I have been of some assistance, it's a walk in the park "really".
Best Regards
Scott

To become an architect takes 7 years of degree and experience based study, to do an HNC would be a total waste of 4 years.
