Extension/Conservatory advice wanted

Hi Oracles

I have a small ground floor courtyard garden, maybe 5 feet by 15 feet, it then has a door to my kitchen and a gate to a communal gated-rear alley.

Would this be a simple and suitable job to have a glass roof put on together with replacing the gate for a secure door in order to extend my internal living space?

Would this be a good idea? any idea of ball park costs? What other tasks would come out of this given it would have previously been a garden. I'm imaging that there must be some other considerations I wouldn't have thought of.

If you actually want to create useful additional habitable floor space then you’ll not simply be able to add a glass roof. You would effectively need to build an extension. You could possibly utilise the boundary walls but at the very least they would need waterproofing and insulating and plasterboarding assuming the neighbours were in agreement and it was actually practical to do so. As well as a proper floor and roof. Not some corrugated plastic sheeting.

Probably more practical to build a complete extension which would set you back around £1000/m² + the cost of the knock through. And a tight site will add more costs.

Alas though let’s not forget planning permission which would be required if you use up more than 50% of your existing external space (do you have a front garden at all?) and I suspect you are unlikely to get planning permission for something that zaps all available external space from the property. http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/permission/commonprojects/extensions/
