Hi,

If I can buy the correct size grinding wheel for metal, can I remove the saw blade used for wood, fit a grinding wheel and use my Hitachi mitre saw to cut metal? Or, is this an absolute non started due to safety issues?

The Hitachi mitre saw is model C10FCA with a single speed of 5000rpm and blade size of 255mm.

I can't see any particular reason why not, but do see that the cutting disc is designed to operate within the machine spindle speed - and a proper vice to hold the material may be a good idea.
You'll need a pretty thin cutting wheel though, to maintain the designed speed! A machine does exist that holds an angle grinder to allow the same effect.

My old Rage mitre saw from B&Q had a disc that was universal for wood and metal, so it's possible. I only used it to cut metal twice and it was fine.

Thx for the replies.

It's 3mm thick box section of mild steel I wish to cut, hopefully I can get a disc that is suitable.

I guess it depends on how many cuts you need to make, but I find a 1mm slitting disc in an angle grinder works very well.

You can probably buy a steel cutting blade for the saw - but as an alternative the evolution blacktip blades are designed to cut nail embedded wood...

Metal cutting circular blades need to be run at greatly reduced RPM - the heat build up is tremendous.
