They have observed the warping of space-time generated by the collision of two black holes more than a billion light-years from Earth.

"It is the first ever direct detection of gravitational waves; it's the first ever direct detection of black holes and it is a confirmation of General Relativity because the property of these black holes agrees exactly with what Einstein predicted almost exactly 100 years ago."
It's that Einstein fellow again! ;)

This lends more credence to theories of traversing vast distances. It's been considered for some time that if there are aliens out there who have visited Earth, they may have used the theory of bending time and space using a form of gravity generator.
For example, your craft is at point A and you wish to travel to point B, which may be several light years away. You could "bend / pull" point a to point b so they become one. You then travel a very short distance crossing into point b. When the gravitational pull is released, point b returns to where it actually was and you go with it. In other words, you travel in jumps.

It's been surmised we can not reach the speed of light in linear travel, you can get close, but no cigar. Your craft would have mass, as you accelerate mass it effectively gains more mass, so needs more power to increase it's speed...and so on. You would need an engine of infinite power, as you're in a never ending circle. Ion powered engines have been considered, but even then it's theoretical and the craft would need a scoop several miles across to trap enough ions.

Back to the topic. It's been considered possible, that when travelling in a linear fashion, you could expand time and space in front of the craft as it travels forward, but compress it back behind. That means that although travelling at less than the speed of light, the distance covered would be in excess that you would have covered if travelling at the speed of light.

All interesting stuff really.

I read the other night that it was two black holes, each with the mass of 30 Suns, colliding.

But that isn't the incredible part.

Supposedly, our Sun has been going for five billion years, and will go on for another five billion.
And, in all that time, it will go through less than 1% of its potential energy.

Those two colliding black holes have resulted in another black hole, with a mass of 57 Suns. Releasing the energy equivalent of three of our Suns, in the process.
In short, our Sun will take ten billion years to yield less than one percent of its potential energy.
The detected event released 300 times that, in a few seconds.

I ain't gonna dismiss your propositions, except, why is there not more evidence of them?
Of course, if they are so far advanced, aren't they controlling our evolution? In which case, there is a God! But they're an alien, but not a deity!

Quite so, Brigadier, the incredible amounts of mass and energy involved is beyond human comprehension, and the minute amounts of detection required, is testament to the conviction of the existence of the warping of gravity and the density of the black holes.

How could you believe all that rubbish that they managed to detect out of all the places on earth that has so much rubbish going on, North Korea exploding underground nuke testing, and Russian planes are carpet bombing Syria and our scientist managed to detect our earth's crust changing by merely 1/12,000 of Nano meter! Then there are oceanic waves with so much energy and force striking our shores, that our planet has thousands of thundering lightening strikes every second somewhere on earth, earths continental plates moving all the time, and there is molten rock under the crust that we are floating on.

To be honest that is a load of bolloks, it is almost impossible to detect such a wave by studying movements in our earth's size distortion, even if they do exist. Our earth most likely moves by about a mile the way its surface is being constantly being disturbed by fracking and what not, by endless human activity and destruction.

How can you guarantee that laser beams don't deflect themselves by other influences rather than our earth wobbling due to these gravitational waves.
Gravity itself bends light, hence we get a gravitational lense effect.

What I am worried about is how will 1000 scientist share a Nobel Price? There won't be enough to go around after dividing it in 1000 parts, each part will probably be the size of a sperm or 1um ! Noble price! huh!

(I don't deny that gravitational waves may exists, same as I don't deny God may also exist)

what! in the 60s using this:

Disturbances by activities going deep inside our Moon and other planets including our sun probably has a million fold more influence on the flexing of our earth!

On any full moon, my wife always seems happy, and on a new moon she is very agitated and moody, Doctors thought it was menopause , but I knew it was the moon's gravitational pull doing it, Doctors wouldn't have it! They blamed it on her depleting hormones!

I suppose the irony that you are "contributing" to this thread by means unfathomable a mere few decades ago, is completely lost on you? ;)

No Brigadier, the irony is do you even know what a micro meter looks like, let alone a nano Meter and a 12,000th of it?
As for "contributing" what do you expect me to do? pop up a bottle of champagne?

It doesn't change anyone's life, and never will do either. Probably make it worst for all humanity on earth. Now that we know gravitational waves really do exist! OMG! help!

I have got a feeling that what they saw on their screens was an audio message for the mankind from ET. Sometimes you are trying to detect something and accidently one can stumble on something altogether unexpected. ET is there for sure!
