2001 reg

Started yesterday and only with engine running. Easy to pull back up but when sticking down, but clutch is not disengaging to get of of gear when stuck down.

Presumably the master cylinder at fault. I've checked the fluid level.

Curious.....when the pedal is stuck down, does it release if you undo the bleed nipple on the slave cylinder?
John :)

That's not something I've tried. I just pull the pedal up by hand.

Are you suggesting a sticking slave piston ?

It's either a stuck piston in either the master or slave cylinder but that's so rare.....I don't understand the significance of only when the engine is running either - I suspect a fault in the clutch pressure plate in this one, but I hope I'm wrong!

No bother when driving along. Only with engine running and at car park speed.

Clutch is loosing bite anyway so debating whether to scrap the car or fit a new clutch.

So when the pedal is stuck down, the clutch isn't releasing anyway? Sounds like the master cylinder as you initially suspected.
What happens when you want to stop?
John :)

As its only in car parks where the car is crawling, I switch off and pull the pedal backup.

Bit of a bother but needs must.

Sadly, being a 2001 reg, its reaching the end of its economic life.

Debating whether to fit a National brand clutch (£60 of ebay) and fix the leaks on the pas and fuel tank.

Been looking at Bora TDIs on Autotrader.

Its getting worse so I'll take the master and slave off and if the problem lies there.

Does the slave come off without taking the gearbox off ?

Can the master or slave cylinders be repaired in anyway if one of them is the problem ?

I suspect the master as the pedal height has always been high. Perhaps there's a circlip inside that's broken and jamming the piston ?

Will dot 4 brake fluid do to refill the clutch on a 45 TD ?

I've been underneath with the car on the ramps and the slave cylinder is working both with engine off and running.

However with someone in the car operating the clutch, when down and it goes light, underneath I can see the slave push rod creeping back to pedal up position so it seems either the master or slave is the problem.

With the pedal stuck down and the slave piston in the pedal up position, I think the pressure plate is off the hook.

Are repair kits like this worth bothering with -

There's also someone selling a 2nd hand master/pipe/slave set which I could consider.

I think it has to be the master cylinder......if fluid was bypassing the slave piston then there would be a fluid leak.
I'd prefer to replace the entire cylinder rather than resealing it, I think.
John :)

Thanks

........and I think why the master is creeping only in 1st and reverse is because there's more vibration on it then.

The ebay listing for the master/pipe/slave is £20 and might cure the high pedal height as well.
