We have just bought a Hotpoint ceramic hob and the wiring instructions are abysmal. We are running the hob off a 6mm cable which is linked to a new fuse board. The hob came with a cable already connected which has 2 live and 2 neutral and one earth and my husband in his wisdom removed this cable (without taking a photo) as he was going to wire the 6mm cable directly to the hob. When this didn't work he then couldn't remember how to re-connect the original cable. The connection plate has three connection on the left number 1,2,3 and three connections on the right numbered 4,5,6. The cable had two earth together and two live together, but they are in fact separate cable and one earth. Could someone advise in no technical language, if phases, loops are mentioned then I am lost.

Is there not a diagram stuck by the terminals? The wiring is usually standard in this sort of thing but without being there to confirm it would just be a guess. He must have made note of where to connect the 6mm cable though?!? Some photos might help.

A model number for the hob might help. He can then search the Hotpoint site and (maybe) come up with a connection plan.

Hobs can be provided in several ways to meet the requirements of the various countries that they are sold in, so the lead for France may well be different to the lead for the UK.

Whatever, he needs to return the hob to its delivered state (ie original lead with whatever jumpers there were) and then provide a suitable junction to connect the hob to the 6mm² cable.

What kind of wazzock did your electrics and did not use a cooker outlet plate?

I'm sure it won't be hard to find which of the two terminals are L and which are N. I hope that DH didn't also in his wisdom throw away the jumpers...

But seriously - fit an outlet plate.
